chaotic moon anthem

(2015)

This project was completed during my time at Chaotic Moon. The company was wanting to experiment with their brand and myself and visual designer Sarah Thomas were asked to create an “anthem” video developing a look and feel of what the future brand might look like. Sarah had already been developing some visuals and exploring the future of the brand so we started there. The goal was a video to explore an experimental version of the brand and also create a video that showcased some of our emerging technology capabilities.

Furthering some of my experiments in college, I wanted to create a video that looked like it may have been computationally rendered but was actually all shot in-camera. The goal was to create camera movements that were rigid, calculated and somewhat robotic while also utilizing optical illusions that feel like they were again were computationally augmented, but was actually all shot in-camera. To achieve this, we built two square projection canvases - the back canvas being a black rear-projection screen and the front canvas another square with a square hole cut into it and was front-projected. When we projected the same content onto the front and back, it created natural parallax in the space as you moved around the canvas and appeared to “slice” the content.

We shot the same sequence multiple times with the camera right-side up and also tilted 45 degrees in either direction. This allowed us to flip our footage in multiple directions in the edit. This was a super fun project that we got to experiment with and the results came out very much how we intended.
